Flappy Bird Gets Wings Clipped

The most popular game app in the world, Flappy Bird, has created such a ruckus in the life of its inventor, Nguyen Ha Dong, that the 29-year-old has decided to remove the game from public sale. A craze of recent interest in the title propelled it to #1 in the world, and estimates are that Flappy Bird is pulling in $50,000 daily from advertising revenue.

Why? In Dong’s own words: “I will take Flappy Bird down. I cannot take this anymore,” he wrote on his Twitter account over the weekend. He also claims it “ruins my simple life.”

Though Flappy Bird was uploaded back in 2013, it has only been in recent weeks that public interest began sending it up the charts. How popular is it? The App Store alone has seen 50 million downloads. Players have latched onto the simplicity and maddening difficulty inherent in the game. Though there have been allegations of fake accounts used to create downloads and reviews, and some say it infringes on copyrights, Dong makes no reference to any of this in his decision to remove the game from public consumption.
